'Wai Chee' - Huai Zhi in pinyin, meaning cherished lychee, and also written Wai Chi or Huai Chih - is the last of the major Chinese cultivars to ripen and one of the most widely grown in Guangdong. Air-layers were introduced to Australia in the 1930s and it became the mainstay of that country's cooler subtropical districts, where it crops heavily and regularly because it initiates flowers reliably even after mild winters. It is also the third most important cultivar in Thailand, where it is known as Kim Cheng. The tree is one of the few genuinely semi-dwarf lychees, forming a dense rounded canopy around 5 m, which combined with late ripening makes it a useful anchor for a small planting. UF/IFAS lists it for Florida but marks both its recommendation and its disease reaction as unknown.Read more
