Viejo

Viejo is a selection attributed to Ramon Martinez in the UF/IFAS cultivar table and one of the mamey accessions held in the USDA/ARS National Germplasm Repository in Miami. Its calling card is timing: it ripens in December, the emptiest month in the Florida mamey calendar, on a spreading tree. UF/IFAS rates the flavour excellent and flags both cold tolerance and precocity emphatically, but does not recommend it for home landscapes, since the fruit is small and the spreading habit takes room. Everglades Farm sells it as a grafted tree and describes it as a reliable classic valued for traditional flavour, so a home grower who wants December mamey can actually buy one.Read more
