Tikal

Tikal is a United States selection from Central American stock, named for the Maya city in Guatemala, and Julia Morton listed it among the newer Florida cultivars worth planting. Its distinguishing traits are earliness and consistency: it comes into season well ahead of the traditional Florida summer cultivars, with a main crop from December into March, and UF/IFAS rates its yield very good. Fruit is ellipsoid to conical, fat at one end, ranging widely from 3 to 11 ounces, with smooth light brown flesh that is noticeably fragrant. It is a productive tree that responds well to hard pruning, and Florida growers commonly hold it at around 12 ft. For anyone who already grows a summer-ripening cultivar, Tikal is the natural companion to extend the harvest through winter.Read more
