Tabouey

'Tabouey' was selected in Indonesia and is the mild-mannered member of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden recommended group: the flesh is pale yellow, firm, and has very little aroma, which makes it the obvious pick for households where jackfruit's strong perfume is unwelcome. It is a late cultivar, ripening September to October alongside 'Black Gold' and stretching the season into fall, and the fruit are medium-large at 20 to 25 lb with a long, tapered, often misshapen outline and irregular bright yellow spines. Its enduring importance in Florida is genetic as much as culinary: 'Sweet Fairchild', selected in Florida by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, arose as a seedling of 'Tabouey'.
