'Sweet Fairchild' was selected in Florida by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden as a seedling of the Indonesian cultivar 'Tabouey', and it inherited its parent's pale flesh and mild aroma while gaining considerably better sweetness and productivity. It is the heavy producer among the Fairchild-bred selections, yielding over 200 lb per tree per year from fruit averaging around 18 lb, and the tree is upright and vigorous but still holds at about 12 ft with annual pruning. The light yellow, firm flesh and mild sweet flavour make it a good choice for growers who want volume without the pungent aroma that puts some people off jackfruit. As a Florida-bred selection it was chosen under Florida conditions rather than adapted to them after the fact, which is part of its appeal to south Florida growers.Read more
