Silas Woods

Silas Woods originated in the Homestead, Florida area and was named for Silas Wood, a longtime member of the Rare Fruit Council International; the original tree reportedly still stands, and the cultivar name picked up a trailing 's' that his surname never had. It is the smallest and most precocious sapodilla in general circulation, with growers reporting fruit on knee-high container plants and crops within one to two years of grafting. The fruit is small, only a few ounces, but the flesh is non-gritty and the eating quality is excellent. It behaves close to everbearing in frost-free settings, giving scattered fruit over much of the year rather than one concentrated crop.
