Si Chompoo

Si Chompoo (also written See Chompoo or Seechompoo, from the Thai for pink) is Thailand's principal alternative to Rongrien and one of the six cultivars maintained and characterised at the Chanthaburi Horticultural Research Center in the country's main rambutan district. Thai postharvest researchers have used the Rongrien / Seechompoo pair repeatedly as a contrast in studies of water loss, because the two differ sharply in spintern morphology while sharing an ovoid fruit shape. It is prized for an aril that releases cleanly from the seed and a milder, less sugary flavour than Rongrien, which suits buyers who find the leading clone heavy. Northern Territory extension flags it as one of the cultivars that produces so few male flowers it cannot be relied on to pollinate itself. It appears in the USDA Hilo germplasm collection as 'Chompoo'.Read more
