'Salathiel' is an Australian selection and one of the country's late-season premium cultivars, harvested in December and January and attracting high prices because it arrives after the bulk of the crop has cleared. It is often described as a smaller, smooth-shouldered version of 'No Mai Chee', sharing that cultivar's thick, crisp, very sweet flesh and its high proportion of chicken-tongue seeds, but bearing more usefully. Flesh recovery of 76-80 percent is exceptional for a fruit this small. Australian nurseries market it as a semi-dwarf, which together with the low vigor UF/IFAS records makes it one of the more practical premium cultivars for a small yard or a large container. UF/IFAS rates the flavor good to excellent but marks its bearing habit and disease reaction as not yet determined.Read more
