Russell is a historic Florida Keys selection, a seedling from Islamorada that was propagated and distributed by R.H. Fitzpatrick, and for decades it was the large-fruited sapodilla in south Florida. Fruit is nearly round and can reach four inches across at 10 to 16 ounces, with brown scurfy skin marked by grey patches and luscious reddish-pink flesh. Its weakness is well documented and worth stating plainly: UF/IFAS rates its yield as poor and Morton flatly called it not a dependable bearer, which is why Prolific was bred and released to replace it. Quality is rated good with a mild fragrance, and the flesh is more granular than modern cultivars.
