Roja Grande
Roja Grande
Roja Grande is the big-fruited red ciruela mexicana of Guerrero, known regionally under a string of synonyms — Costeña, Reina, China and Panameña — and ranked second only to Roja Dulce in grower and consumer preference in the 2024 survey of nine morphotypes from central Guerrero. Its fruit runs 20 to 33 g, and the closely related Costeña or ciruela china accession sampled in a separate Guerrero and Morelos characterisation study reached 36 g and 45 mm long, among the largest Spondias purpurea fruits ever recorded, in a set where fruit mass across 86 accessions ranged from about 3 to 43 g. Beyond sheer size it has the best postharvest keeping of the Guerrero morphotypes, which is why it holds up in the towns of Villa Guerrero and Tierra Colorada, and it shared the top 2021 market price with Roja Dulce. For anyone choosing one Mexican jocote clone for fresh eating and market sales, this is the size-and-shipping selection.Read more
