Red Hybrid is the cultivar that solved the biggest practical problem with jaboticaba: the decade-long wait for a seedling to fruit. It is an interspecific cross of Plinia cauliflora with the white jaboticaba Plinia aureana, and the aureana parent contributes both precocity and the lighter fruit colour. Where a standard purple jaboticaba seedling may need 8 to 10 years or more, Red Hybrid commonly fruits within 3 to 5 years from seed and 2 to 4 years from a graft. UF/IFAS lists it first among the jaboticaba cultivars suited to Florida home gardeners, and it is now one of the most widely offered jaboticabas in the US nursery trade, including at Sow Exotic.
