Red Delicious

Red Delicious is the deep-red, elongated apple with five knobs at its base that was for decades the most widely grown apple in the United States. Originating in Iowa in the 1880s, it has thick red skin and mild, sweet, low-acid flesh best suited to fresh eating rather than cooking. A midseason to late dessert apple.
