Rapiah is a Pasar Minggu selection from Jakarta and, with Binjai and Lebak Bulus, one of the three Indonesian clones that anchor that country's rambutan trade. ITFNet lists it among Indonesia's principal commercial cultivars, and it is one of the fifteen or so clones grown commercially in Australia's Northern Territory and Queensland. Indonesian horticultural writing values it for flesh that is thick, firm and cleanly freestone -- the aril comes away from the seed without the testa clinging, which is precisely the trait Malaysian and Australian breeders list as the mark of a good variety. It also keeps unusually well for a rambutan, with a stated shelf life of around six days, which is why it travels through Java's markets.
