R99
R99 is an early Malaysian Department of Agriculture clone from the Penang group and the heavy cropper of the set imported into north Queensland in 1973. In the 1984 assessment it carried 627 fruit per tree, far more than any other clone in the trial -- R3 managed 351 and R134 250 -- and it was recommended for planting on that basis despite finishing last of five in the taste ranking. It is a useful illustration of the trade-off breeders face in rambutan: its fruit are the smallest of the group but its spintern density is the lowest recorded in Northern Territory clone comparisons, a trait directly linked to slower moisture loss and better shelf life. Some Malaysian sources attach the name 'Gula Batu' to R99 rather than to R3, so nursery labels should be treated with care.Read more
