R167 (Chai Tow Cheng)

R167, registered in Malaysia as 'Chai Tow Cheng', is one of the most widely distributed rambutan clones in the world, partly because it doubles as a standard rootstock -- USDA-ARS grafted its entire eight-cultivar Puerto Rico trial onto R-167 seedling stocks. As a scion it is grown for large, elongated, sweet red fruit with flesh that lifts cleanly off the seed, and it sat in the top soluble-solids group at the Corozal site alongside Rongrien, Jitlee and R-162. It is held in the USDA Hilo germplasm collection, was one of the eight cultivars in the University of Hawaii phenology study, and is one of the few numbered Malaysian clones offered as a named grafted tree by small tropical nurseries in the Americas.
