R162 (Ong Heok)

R162, listed in Malaysian clone registers as 'Ong Heok' (some USDA material records it under the name 'Daun Hijau'), is the productivity champion of the internationally traded clones. Across a five-year USDA-ARS evaluation at two Puerto Rican sites, R-162 produced more fruit and higher yield than Gula Batu regardless of rootstock, and at the drier Isabela site it and Gula Batu together averaged 234,153 fruit and 6,979 kg per hectare while the rest of the field trailed. Grafted on Gula Batu it also recorded the highest soluble-solids concentration of any cultivar-rootstock combination in that trial. The tree itself is vigorous, and the fruit's thick, dry-firm aril suits both fresh sale and processing. It is a mainstay of Malaysian commercial plantings and appears in the Hawaii cultivar sets used for pollination research.Read more
