Ponhema
Ponhema
Ponhema is the processing jaboticaba of the classic Brazilian cultivar list, documented by Morton and repeated in the CRFG fruit facts. It is unmistakable in the hand because the fruit is not round: it is turnip-shaped with a distinctly pointed apex, a shape no other named jaboticaba shares. The tree is the largest of the traditional selections and is described as extremely productive, which is exactly what a preserve crop needs. Brazilian growers note the name Ponhema is sometimes used loosely alongside açu and Paulista for the big thick-skinned jaboticabas, so nursery material sold under these names can overlap. Where Sabará is the fresh-eating standard, Ponhema is the cultivar traditionally reserved for jelly, doces and liqueur.Read more
