Pitarrillo Amarillo
Pitarrillo Amarillo is the yellow-fruited dry-season jocote of El Salvador, one of the nine cultivars recognised in the national inventory and grown throughout the hot lowlands below about 700 m. It is set apart from the other yellow-skinned jocotes by its unusual cylindrical fruit shape rather than the rounded or flattened outline typical of the species. Its great weakness is handling: the fruit has poor transport durability, so unlike Corona or Chapín it never developed into a shipping cultivar and is instead sold close to where it is grown, at farm gates, roadside stands and local markets during the February-to-April window. That makes it a good example of the sort of clone that survives in Mesoamerican dooryard and living-fence agriculture precisely because it does not have to travel, and it is worth planting where the grower eats what the tree produces.Read more
