Paulista, also circulated in Brazil under the name jabuticaba-açu, is the classic large-fruited counterpoint to Sabará and is the selection most closely tied to Plinia cauliflora proper. It was among the jaboticabas introduced to California in 1904, making it one of the oldest named clones outside Brazil. Where Sabará trades on thin skin and repeat cropping, Paulista trades on size and vigour: the tree is a strong grower and heavy bearer that concentrates its production into a single annual crop ripening later than Sabará. Morton and CRFG both note it as rust-resistant, a meaningful advantage in humid subtropical climates where Sabará struggles.
