Pace is a Florida-raised selection from grower-nurseryman Pablo Lara, reported by South Florida growers to be a Magana x Tazumal cross, with the name assembled from the first syllables of Pablo and his wife's names. It appears to have inherited the precocity of Magana and the cold tolerance of Tazumal. UF/IFAS gives it excellent flavour, high yield, cold tolerance and precocity and recommends it for home landscapes, one of only a handful of cultivars to score well across the entire table. Its March-April ripening lands in an early window when almost nothing else in a South Florida dooryard is producing. Many South Florida growers now rate it the best all-round mamey available, with some preferring it to Pantin on flavour, and it is stocked by Homestead-area nurseries as a grafted tree.Read more
