Oxkutzcab
Oxkutzcab takes its name from the town of Oxkutzcab in the Yucatán, the heart of Mexican sapodilla country, and it is grown for one reason above all: size. UF/IFAS records fruit up to 28 ounces, nearly a pound and three quarters, which puts it in mamey sapote territory and makes it far and away the largest sapodilla in the Florida cultivar table. Despite the bulk, quality is rated very good and yield very good, so it is not simply a novelty. The fruit is roundish, softball-shaped, with reddish-brown flesh carrying the usual brown-sugar sweetness plus a little more granular texture than the smoothest cultivars. It ripens May through September, in the traditional Florida summer window, and is often sold in Florida under the shortened nursery name 'Ox'.Read more
