Otto Andersen
Otto Andersen
Otto Andersen, usually sold in full as Otto Andersen Branca Vinho, is a Brazilian selection made by the collector of that name, who spent years screening jaboticaba trees for the best eating quality. In a Brazilian study of four jabuticabas it recorded the highest soluble solids of the group at 19.9 degrees Brix — the sweetest reading in the trial — along with the largest fruit at 11.6 g. Sources disagree on its botanical placement, with UF/IFAS listing it as Plinia phitrantha and the Brazilian analysis as P. cauliflora. Beyond the fruit it is grown as an ornamental: the leaves are larger than Sabará's and emerge deep wine red before hardening to dark green, which is where the Branca Vinho name comes from. It is also notably precocious for a non-hybrid jaboticaba and can crop several times a year.Read more
