'NS1' was selected in Malaysia and was among the first superior jackfruit cultivars successfully established in the Western Hemisphere, which makes it the historical benchmark against which later introductions to Florida were judged. It combines an early crop with the heaviest reliable yields in the Fairchild trial group, reported at 200 lb or more per tree per year from a tree of only moderate size. The arils are firm and dark orange, a texture type prized in Southeast Asia for eating out of hand rather than for cooking down. Because it has been in Florida so long, a great deal of seed-grown 'NS1' circulates: Cody Cove Farm sells fresh NS1 seed and is explicit that it treats the name as a strain rather than a clone, since seedlings are generations removed from the original grafted tree.
