Mayapan, named for the late Maya capital in Yucatan, is another Tropical Research and Education Center selection and one of the five cultivars UF/IFAS recommends outright for Florida home landscapes. It is a tall, upright grower, a better shape for a narrow lot than the spreading types, and it carries high yields of red-fleshed fruit in the main July-August season alongside Pantin. It is rated cold tolerant, which matters at the northern edge of mamey country in South Florida. Flavour is rated good rather than excellent, so it reads as a dependable dooryard producer rather than a connoisseur's fruit. It was one of six cultivars in the five-year Puerto Rico yield evaluation and is maintained in the USDA/ARS National Germplasm Repository collection in Miami.Read more
