Magana
Magana is the giant of the mamey world and Florida's number-two commercial cultivar; with Pantin it covers 95-98% of the state's acreage. Budwood came out of El Salvador and was first grafted and evaluated at the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead in 1961, with trees planted out on the property in 1962. It is prized for enormous fruit and for precocity: it flowers and fruits sooner after grafting than almost any other mamey and moves from bloom to harvest in roughly 12-13 months rather than the 18-24 months typical of the species. The tree itself stays comparatively small and slow-growing, which is why nurseries recommend it for small yards and large containers. Its weakness is cold, and UF/IFAS lists it as the one major commercial cultivar lacking cold tolerance. In Puerto Rico trials it was among the highest-yielding cultivars per hectare at the Corozal site.Read more
