Lebak Bulus
Lebak Bulus
Lebak Bulus is a Jakarta selection, named for the Lebak Bulus district in the Pasar Minggu area that was once the fruit-growing belt on the city's southern edge. It is one of the four or five Indonesian clones that carried into international collections and orchards, appearing in Malaysia's clone register among the foreign introductions, in Australian commercial plantings, and in the list of most popular cultivars compiled by USDA-ARS. Its selling point is exceptional flesh yield combined with short spinterns: 53.18 percent flesh recovery with spines of only 11.5 mm in Northern Territory clone comparisons. Morton's classic account describes the older Dutch-era spelling 'Lebakbooloos' and notes it ships well over distance, a reputation Indonesian growers still trade on.Read more
