Kelly Renee traces to a single full-russet apple tree Ken Asmus found at an abandoned homestead in northern Michigan, a fruit he likened to a baked potato hanging in a tree. He grew out a batch of its seedlings on his farm in southwestern Michigan and kept the most vigorous one, which became Kelly Renee. What makes it interesting is not flavor fireworks but its management record: across roughly a decade Asmus sprayed it at most twice in a season and often not at all, and still harvested clean fruit. In the kitchen it behaves as a sauce and baking apple, with dense white flesh that holds together instead of collapsing, a trait he compares to Northern Spy.
