'J-31' is a Malaysian selection and the large-fruited member of the recommended Florida group, producing irregular fruit in the 25 to 26 lb range from a tree that can still be held at head height. It is one of the few cultivars documented to crop reliably off-season, throwing fall and winter fruit in addition to its main early crop, which is genuinely useful in a home orchard planned for spread-out harvests. The flesh is deep yellow rather than orange and unusually thick-walled, with a firm bite and a pronounced earthy aroma that divides opinion. Fairchild specifically notes that its fruit rarely split, a real advantage in Florida's wet summers where several other cultivars lose fruit to rain cracking.
