Gula Batu -- Malay for rock sugar -- is one of the oldest named Penang selections, registered in the Malaysian clone series as R3 and among the first group of clones exported for evaluation abroad. It was in the 1973 Queensland import that established rambutan on Australia's wet tropical coast, and it remains a standard in the USDA Hilo collection. Its modern importance is as much below ground as above: USDA-ARS work in Puerto Rico concluded that Gula Batu is a superior rootstock that performs very well under alkaline soil conditions, an unusual trait in a genus that generally sulks above pH 6.5. At the Isabela site Gula Batu and R-162 out-yielded every other cultivar in the trial. Hawaii sources also credit it with some resistance to corky bark disease.Read more
