Guaturca — spelled Guaturco in Nicaragua — is a yellow-fruited dry-season jocote documented on both sides of the Salvadoran-Nicaraguan divide. It appears in El Salvador's inventory of nine recognised jocote varieties as a summer type harvested February to April, and independently in Nicaragua as one of the four veranero clonal cultivars maintained in the Universidad Nacional Agraria's arboretum collection in Managua. Missouri Botanical Garden's Mesoamerican jocote survey recorded it in Nicaragua as "jocote guaturco" and a related name, "jocote turco," in El Salvador. It sits in the sweeter half of the dry-season group and produces medium to large fruit, which puts it ahead of small-fruited clones like Azucarón and Pitarrillo for fresh market sales, though it has never had the commercial reach of Barón Rojo or Corona.Read more
