Grimal is the best-known American-introduced jaboticaba, named for Adolf Grimal, the Big Pine Key fruit collector who brought it back from South America and established it in his Florida Keys grove. It also circulates in the trade under the Brazilian name Peluda de Alagoas, and UF/IFAS places it in Plinia spirito-santensis rather than P. cauliflora, so it is a distinct clone rather than a straight Sabará-type selection. Collectors keep it for size and richness: the fruit is markedly larger than Sabará with thick pulp and small seeds, and both skin and young foliage carry a faint hairiness that distinguishes it on sight. It has enough commercial standing in Hawaii to be used in the Volcano Winery red wine made from jaboticaba. Among rare-fruit growers it has become one of the cornerstone cultivars.Read more
