Fukuoka is the major large-fruited jaboticaba of the East Asian industry, reported as the second most widely planted cultivar in China after Sabará. Jaboticaba reached Taiwan through Brazilian seedling imports in 1962 and Hawaiian seed in 1967, and Chinese cultivation followed from Taiwan in the 1990s; Fukuoka emerged from that lineage as the processing workhorse. A published comparative study of three jaboticaba cultivars found it produced by far the biggest berries in the trial at 16.76 g and 31.1 mm, roughly double the fresh weight of Sabará. Its sugar-to-acid ratio is the lowest of the three and it carries fewer aroma volatiles, which is why researchers concluded it is best suited to juice processing rather than the fresh market.
