Escarlate
Escarlate, sold in English-speaking nurseries as Scarlet, is the fastest-fruiting jaboticaba in general cultivation and the one most often recommended to impatient growers. Its parentage is reported differently by different sources: Australian and US nurseries describe it as the Red Hybrid backcrossed to the white jaboticaba Plinia aureana, while a Brazilian volatile-compound study lists it as Plinia phitrantha crossed with P. cauliflora. Either way it is a documented hybrid rather than a straight species selection, and its defining traits are a genuinely compact habit and fruit that ripens bright scarlet-red instead of purple-black. GreenDreams rates it the earliest of all their jaboticabas to come into bearing, and Daley's in Australia sells it specifically as a dwarf for containers and small gardens. The Brazilian study noted the fruits develop laterally and run smaller in mass than the black-fruited cultivars.Read more
