ESALQ

ESALQ is a named Plinia phitrantha jaboticaba selection carrying the initials of the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz, the University of São Paulo agricultural school at Piracicaba where it was distinguished. It appears in a Brazilian study of four jabuticabas alongside Sabará, Escarlate and Otto Andersen, and in the UF/IFAS list of jaboticaba cultivars for Florida home gardeners, so it has both research and extension documentation behind it. Its distinguishing feature is colour: it recorded the lowest hue angle of the four cultivars tested, meaning the brightest, most saturated reddish-vinaceous skin rather than the flat purple-black of a standard jaboticaba. It is also one of the larger-fruited jaboticabas, reaching about 4 cm in diameter. Among Brazilian collectors it is prized for the velvety texture of its pulp.Read more
