Deli Cheng (R170)
Deli Cheng is the Malaysian Department of Agriculture clone R170, one of the later registrations in a series that runs to R193, and it is held in the USDA germplasm collection at Hilo under its Malay name. It belongs to the group of vigorous, large-fruited red clones that Malaysian growers planted through the 1970s and 1980s alongside R191 Rongrien and R193 Deli Baling. What sets it apart is a distinctly dry, firm aril at around 20 percent soluble solids on fruit averaging 38 g -- a heavier fruit than Rongrien with a drier bite. Aril recovery of about 40 percent is only moderate for a Malaysian clone, which is one reason it never displaced the thick-fleshed selections such as R156 and R162 in commercial plantings, but it is well documented and still grown.Read more
