Jocote de Corona is the prestige cultivar of the species and the one horticultural literature has praised longest: Julia Morton, writing in Fruits of Warm Climates, singled it out as the superior Guatemalan sort, distinguished by fruit that is flattened and shouldered at the apex. That shoulder is what gives the clone its name, the little "crown" at the blossom end. Unlike most jocotes it is a highland selection, grown between roughly 850 and 1,500 m, and in El Salvador its plantations blanket the skirts of the Santa Ana and San Vicente volcanoes and the Cerro Verde massif, where individual farms are reported to pick on the order of 23,000 fruits a day through the season and 185,000 to 250,000 over the whole harvest. It carries enough cultural weight to have its own annual Feria del Jocote Corona, and it is also the backbone of the jocote trade in Chiquimula, eastern Guatemala.
