Conference is the leading pear in the United Kingdom, raised in England and introduced in 1894, named after a national pear conference where it was exhibited. It is a reliable, heavy-cropping variety that is partially self-fertile, an important advantage in cooler, wetter British conditions. The fruits are long and narrow with a distinctive tapering shape, green skin heavily marked with brown russet that turns yellowish when ripe, and sweet, juicy, fine-textured pale flesh. Conference is versatile for fresh eating, cooking, and canning and keeps well in storage. It sets fruit dependably even in poor pollination weather, sometimes producing seedless, elongated fruit.
