Cochin

'Cochin' carries the name of the port city in Kerala but was selected in Australia, and it is the smallest-fruited cultivar in the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden evaluation, averaging only about 3.3 lb per fruit. That size, combined with the smallest tree in the trial, makes it the closest thing to a genuinely container-scale jackfruit. The rind spines flatten as the fruit matures, giving an unusually smooth exterior, and the flesh is firm to crunchy with very little of the sticky latex that makes jackfruit processing a chore. It occasionally produces an edible 'rag', the fibrous tissue between arils that is usually discarded. The one caution from the Fairchild data is that the tree has low vigour and may decline after a heavy crop, so thinning fruit on a young tree is sensible.Read more
