About Pomelo

Pomelo, also spelled pummelo, is the largest citrus fruit and one of the two parent species of grapefruit. Citrus grandis, now usually listed as Citrus maxima, is a broad evergreen tree from Southeast Asia with glossy leaves, fragrant white flowers, and round to pear-shaped fruit up to a foot across. Its thick rind peels away from firm segments, mildly sweet to tart. Grow pomelo in full sun in well-drained soil, and water regularly through dry spells and while fruit is sizing. It suits USDA zones 9 to 11 and needs freeze protection in north Florida, and like citrus generally it is sensitive to salty soil and water. Mature trees can reach 30 feet tall and nearly as wide, and in Florida the fruit ripens through the winter. 'Chandler' is a sweet, pink-fleshed selection.
