'Cheena' is not a pure jackfruit at all but a natural hybrid between jackfruit and champedak (Artocarpus integer), selected in Australia and now widely grown in Florida. That parentage shows in everything about it: the fruit is small and long-necked like a champedak, the aroma is far more intense than a standard jackfruit, and the arils are soft, melting and slightly fibrous rather than crisp. Fairchild's evaluators rated its eating quality excellent and very aromatic, and it is on the short list of cultivars recommended for both commercial and home use. A practical advantage is how quickly it processes: a 'Cheena' can be broken down in as little as 15 minutes, against the far messier hour-plus job of a 40 lb standard jackfruit.
