Chapín is one of the three rainy-season (invierno) jocote cultivars grown in El Salvador, harvested July to September alongside Jocote de Corona and Jocote de Invierno. Where Corona is prized for sweetness, Chapín is the acid one of the winter group, and its commercial value rests on a different trait: it is a large fruit that holds up well in transport, which is unusual in a species notorious for two-to-four-day shelf life. That durability makes it the practical choice for growers who need to move fruit to regional markets rather than sell at the roadside. The clone is also logged in Missouri Botanical Garden's Mesoamerican jocote survey as "jocote de chapin" from El Salvador. Unlike Corona it is not a highland type, growing from near sea level up to about 800 m, so it fits a much wider range of lowland sites.Read more
