CCN-51

Theobroma cacao

CCN-51 (Coleccion Castro Naranjal 51) is a high-yielding clone developed by Ecuadorian breeder Homero Castro Zurita in the Naranjal region around 1965, bred in response to a devastating witches broom epidemic; the 51 marks the 51st cross in his series. A complex hybrid of (ICS-95 by IMC-67) by an Amazonian Oriente 1 selection, it is genetically about 45 percent Iquitos, 22 percent Criollo and 21 percent Amelonado and unrelated to Ecuador heirloom Nacional. It now dominates modern Ecuadorian and Peruvian cocoa, though it is classed as bulk rather than fine-flavour.Read more
