Butterscotch

Butterscotch is a comparatively recent Florida release attributed by nurseries to Zill High Performance Plants, the Boynton Beach breeding operation best known for its mango introductions. It is marketed on flavour rather than novelty: large football-shaped fruit with a caramel and butterscotch character on top of the usual brown-sugar sapodilla base, and a melt-in-the-mouth texture. Because it is a newer cultivar it has not yet appeared in UF/IFAS extension cultivar tables, so the available descriptive data comes from the nurseries propagating it rather than from published trials, and prospective growers should weigh it accordingly. It is sold both as grafted trees and as air layers by several Florida nurseries. Fruit development takes six to nine months from bloom, with the harvest concentrated in spring and summer.Read more
