Brown Sugar is a Florida selection that came out of the Homestead area in the late 1940s and has stayed in commerce ever since on the strength of its handling qualities. UF/IFAS rates fruit quality as very good and yield as good to very good, and Julia Morton's survey of Florida cultivars singled it out as a regular, high yielder whose fruit handles and keeps well, historically producing five to eight bushels a year from a mature tree. The fruit is on the small side at roughly 4.6 to 6 ounces, which suits fresh eating and reduces the losses that plague oversized cultivars. Its May-to-September season places it squarely in the traditional Florida summer sapodilla window. It remains one of the easiest grafted cultivars to find at Florida nurseries.Read more
