'Bengal' is a Florida seedling selection whose parentage traces back to lychees from West Bengal, India, and UF/IFAS lists it with the alternate name 'Rose Scented'. It became genuinely important abroad before it faded at home - during Australia's lychee expansion in the 1970s it was the second most planted cultivar after 'Tai So', and it is still grown in Africa and Australia. In Florida, irregular bearing and a poor flesh-to-seed ratio kept it out of commercial orchards, and UF/IFAS does not recommend it for either home or commercial planting, though Pine Island Nursery and other Florida sources still carry it for dooryard growers.
