Abuelo

Abuelo is a South Florida selection credited to Bienvenido Suarez (Acosta) in the UF/IFAS mamey sapote cultivar table. It belongs to the giant-fruited camp alongside Magana, running 740-2,400 g, and it carries deep red pulp with flavour UF/IFAS rates excellent, a combination no other very large-fruited cultivar in the table matches. Its real distinction is season: it ripens in October and November, well after the main summer cultivars and before the winter selections, on a spreading tree with medium yields. UF/IFAS does not recommend it for home landscapes, since a wide canopy, medium productivity and uncharacterised cold tolerance make it a specialist's tree rather than a first mamey.Read more
